About

Anthony DeGuzman

I'm an Instructional Designer based out of New York. I'm a problem solver that strives to uncover training solutions through creative, thoughtful, efficient, and effective designs.

Background

My path into becoming an Instructional Designer began from a desire for change. Graduating with a B.A. in Geography, I was initially going down the path to become a teacher. After working at a local credit union for several years and climbing up the corporate ladder, I received the opportunity to become the credit union's Financial Education Counselor- my first foray into teaching.

Within the role, I created and designed educational content to help credit union members and people within the local communities with their finances, addressing topics such as budgeting, handling credit wisely, and become a first-time homeowner. Deliverables ranged from presentations/seminars to providing resources, handouts, and spreadsheets to use at individual meetings with clients.

Over time, my accomplishments within the role led me into the credit union's training team as a Technical Specialist/Training Facilitator. In this role, I worked on various technological projects that were both used internally and externally. I learned the main goals and aspirations of stakeholders with each project, and how it would impact the end-user. I was tasked with focusing on our staff's training needs, utilizing both traditional and technological methods of instruction.

Fast forward a few years, holding various frontline and backline positions at a different credit union, I evolved into an Instructional Designer within their training team. In my current role, I design and deliver effective training solutions for both onboarding our new hire staff in various job roles, as well as aid in the continued development of our existing staff with additional training opportunities throughout the organization.

The Process

In any training solution I create, the end user (aka the learner) always has to be in focus. With every decision an ID makes for their training, they have to think about the consequences, which ultimately comes down to the business impact to the organization. I'm looking to help create training that is user-friendly, while accomplishing key learning objectives for participants to take back on the job. As someone that enjoys continuing to learn, understanding problems/skill gaps in organizations, and distinguishing if training can solve it is something I can relate to.

Through the use of ADDIE, but with an Agile mindset, I seek to design training through analysis of what stakeholders desire and what they want to accomplish, helping their staff get them there. Using ID and collaborating with stakeholders throughout the process, I've been able to aid in stakeholders reaching their goals and create effective, efficient experiences from microlearning modules to multiple-session ILTs. I enjoy the opportunity to leave a meaningful mark with each project. With a background in teaching and learning, a passion in technology, and an open mind to creativity, anything is possible.
